Media Law Bootcamp
September 22 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT
MVJ’s Media Law Bootcamp is a one-hour virtual webinar designed to be useful for any journalist working in the U.S., and especially for those who might go out into the field as a freelancer. It is a foundational course for entry-level reporters and a valuable refresher for reporters who have been working even for years. Students will learn their rights and responsibilities as a reporter and will receive additional resources for more advanced concerns. In our short time together, we will focus on three essential areas of media law for reporters:
Dr. Jeffrey Layne Blevins (Ph.D., Ohio University) is Professor and Head of the Journalism Department at the University of Cincinnati and editor of the scholarly journal Democratic Communiqué. A frequent opinion-editorial columnist, Dr. Blevins’ commentary on media policy and ethics have appeared in USA Today, Cincinnati Enquirer, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, PandoDaily, Gateway Journalism Review and other venues. His scholarly research examines telecommunication policy and the political economy of U.S. media industries with a recent focus on social media networks. Dr. Blevins is co-author of a forthcoming book, “Social Media, Social Justice and the Political Economy of Online Networks” (University of Cincinnati Press, 2021). He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Military Intelligence Corps and attained the rank of Specialist (E-4), and is a lifetime member of MVJ.
