Wendy Lu is an award-winning journalist, editor, and leading voice in disability representation in media. She currently serves as deputy editor on the Flexible Editing desk at The New York Times, where she collaborates across the newsroom to help editors strengthen their craft and storytelling. A graduate of Columbia Journalism School, Lu previously reported on disability at HuffPost and has built a career centered on elevating disabled voices with rigor, nuance, and care.
At the Times, Lu has authored and edited impactful work on the disability beat, including a profile of influencers Shane and Hannah Burcaw, a tribute to legendary activist Kitty Cone, and an exploration of what truly “human-centered” workplaces can look like for disabled people. She credits the Americans with Disabilities Act as foundational to her personal and professional journey, noting that it enabled her to access education, accommodations, and a career in journalism, and to participate fully in her communities.
Lu’s influence extends beyond the page. A Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree in Media, she was also named a 2022 Disability Futures Fellow by the Ford Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and United States Artists. As a Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow, she developed curriculum to improve disability coverage and works with newsrooms to bet
A sought-after speaker and educator, Lu has lectured and led workshops at institutions including Harvard, Princeton, and the Asian American International Film Festival. Her debut middle-grade novel, Casting April, will be published by Knopf Books for Young Readers in 2026—further expanding her commitment to inclusive storytelling across generations.
