About the Speaker

New York Times investigative reporter
Tawnell Hobbs

Tawnell D. Hobbs is based in Dallas, covering issues including child safety, veterans, education, and cyber threats. Her work focuses on complex, high-impact stories that explain not just what’s happening, but why it matters.

Before joining The Times in 2025, she spent nearly nine years at The Wall Street Journal, reporting on topics such as school shootings, cyberattacks, and the January 6 United States Capitol attack. Her investigation into TikTok’s algorithm and its impact on minors was part of a Gerald Loeb Award-winning project, and she contributed to Pulitzer finalist coverage of the Tulsa Race Massacre.

A military veteran, Hobbs served in the United States Air Force and the Texas Air National Guard, and previously taught journalism at Texas Christian University.
